Lights that follow people and daylight

Bisly switches and dims the lighting by presence, daylight and timetable, room by room. DALI-2 runs addressable luminaires, and TRIAC dimmers run the dimmable circuits a building already has. Both sit in the same system as heating and ventilation, so one sensor, one controller and one BMS run the whole room.

Light where people are, at the level the room needs

Presence control

Lights switch on when someone comes in and off when the room is empty. Microwave sensors see the small movements of someone working at a desk, so nobody has to wave an arm.

Daylight harvesting

A light sensor reads the level at the desks and dims the luminaires to add only what daylight does not give. The rows by the windows dim first, and the level stays constant through the day.

Scenes and timetables

Each room type gets its light levels and scenes once, in the digital twin: a meeting room for presenting, a classroom for an exam, a corridor at night. Timetables and holidays apply to every room at once.

Tunable white

DALI-2 colour-temperature drivers shift from cooler light in the morning to warmer light in the afternoon, for offices and schools that want human-centric lighting.

What lighting control saves

Lighting control is a mature technology and its savings are well documented. A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory meta-analysis of 240 savings estimates from 88 studies of commercial buildings found these average savings in lighting energy. Bisly uses the same strategies: presence, daylight, light levels per zone, and all of them together.

24%

from presence sensors that switch off empty rooms

28%

36%

from setting the light level per room or zone, so no space is lit brighter than it needs

38%

from combining the strategies

Averages across field studies and case studies. What a building saves depends on how each room is used and how the lighting was controlled before.

Rooms that stand empty save the most

Lighting energy saved by presence sensors alone, by room type. Daylight harvesting and zone light levels come on top.

Room typeLighting energy saved by presence sensors
Restrooms30-90%
Corridors30-80%
Storage areas45-80%
Warehouses and halls35-54%
Classrooms40-46%
Conference and meeting rooms45%
Private offices13-50%
Break rooms29%
Open-plan offices10%

In open-plan offices, where someone is almost always present, daylight harvesting and zone light levels save more than presence control.

Two ways to control the lights, one system

Choose per floor or per room. New buildings and full refurbishments usually take DALI-2; buildings that keep their luminaires and cabling take TRIAC dimmers. Both run in the same BMS and app.

The devices

DALI-2 lighting

  • Bisly DALI Bridge 2 (LD02): the floor's DALI-2 application controller, with bus power on board and schedules on its own clock
  • Bisly Presence Sensor (SP01-D2): microwave presence and lux, DALI-2 and D4i certified
  • Bisly Presence Sensor High-bay (SP02-D2): PIR and lux for ceilings up to 10 m
  • Bisly DALI Input 4 (LI04-D2): 4 push buttons onto the DALI-2 line, in the wall box

TRIAC lighting

  • Bisly UM6D 6-channel dimmer: 6 x 240 W, leading or trailing edge, 6 switch inputs
  • Bisly UMD 2-channel dimmer: 2 x 220 W, fits a 68 mm wall box behind the switch, 2 switch inputs and a 1-Wire bus for temperature sensors
  • Bisly UMS Supersensor, black or white: PIR presence in a 4 m radius as standard or radar presence as an option, 0.1-30,000 lx and colour temperature, plus CO₂, VOC, humidity and temperature

How daylight harvesting holds the level

  1. Measure

The sensor reads the light level at the desks, every few seconds.

  2. Compare

It compares the reading with the level set for the room type, for example 300 lx or 500 lx in a classroom under EN 12464-1.

  3. Dim

The luminaires add only the difference: the rows by the windows dim first, the rows further in stay brighter.

  4. Hold

The level stays where it should through the day, and the room switches off when nobody is in it.

One sensor for the lights and the climate

The same presence signal that switches the lights also sets back the heating and lowers the ventilation in an empty room. The UMS Supersensor measures presence, light, temperature, humidity, CO₂ and VOC in one ceiling device, so a room needs one sensor instead of three.

Wired and wirelessBoth portfolios run heating, ventilation and lighting: wired devices in new buildings and refurbishments, Bisly Wireless with Matter luminaires, drivers and switches where a retrofit should not open the ceilings.
One BMSThe facility team sees lighting next to heating, ventilation and meters, with lighting energy per floor or tenancy and an alarm when a circuit or sensor stops reporting.

Where it fits

Offices

Open-plan floors on DALI-2 with presence and daylight per zone, meeting rooms with scenes, corridors that dim when empty.

Offices

Schools

Each classroom holds 300 lx or 500 lx as EN 12464-1 sets out, daylight dims the window rows and the sports hall gets high-bay sensors.

Schools

Stock offices and halls

High-bay presence sensors for halls and loading areas up to 10 m, office lighting on its own schedule.

Stock offices

Retrofit

TRIAC dimmers behind the existing switches and in the switchboard, so the luminaires and cabling stay.
